GANDHINAGAR: Faced with sparse rainfall, the Gujarat government has decided to wait for another week, in the hope that the flagging monsoon would revive during this period, before taking a call on declaring the state drought-hit. A special meeting held by agriculture minister Dilip Sanghani observed that there was "nothing to worry about delay in rains as of now'. However, if the monsoon remains elusive for another week, an action plan to fight an impending drought will be announced. The meeting was held following instructions from Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. Review of the agricultural scene revealed grim facts about the progress of the monsoon so far. Gujarat has received just about 20 per cent of average rainfall of the last decade, as against 55 per cent which was recorded till July 10 last year. The state's 193 major and minor dams had 27 per cent of their gross storage capacity, as against 57 per cent exactly a year ago. Sowing has taken place over 71 per cent of the area covered at this time last year. The rainfall in the early phase of 2007 season was particularly heavy leading to floods. Compared to the progress on this date last year, paddy sowing is 59.43, cotton 64.95 per cent and pulses 45.85 per cent. A senior official told TOI that agriculture experts should have been involved already to work out a contingency plan because poor farmers who depend only on rainfall have started to feel the pinch. Meanwhile, the weather officials are hoping for moderate rainfall over north Gujarat, which has witnessed deficient rainfall so far, over the next two-three days. "The low pressure lying over Madhya Pradesh is expected to cover north Gujarat in a couple of days,' said Kamaljeet Ray, director (forecasting) of the India Meteorological Department.
