Statesman News Service KOLKATA Aug. 3: Members of Solvent Extractors Association of India claimed that despite the common notion that consumption of edible oil increases cholesterol levels, there are certain nutritional benefits in some edible oils, particularly in rice bran oil, to control cholesterol. Speaking at a seminar organised by the association in the city today, Mr Ashok Sethia, president of the association said: "Rice bran oil contains certain micro-nutrients called Oryzanol and when used in cooking, it helps in controlling the cholesterol level and reduces the risk of cardio-vascular and lifestyle diseases.' The association has invited some cardiologists, experts from the industry and senior scientists from various parts of the state working on rice bran oil to share their views and create awareness amongst the masses. Members of the association also claimed that rice bran oil has better cholesterol lowering properties than other cooking oils as it contains balanced fatty acid. According to the latest guidelines issued by the National Institute of Nutrition, every person should consume at least 20 grams of oil per day. It might go up to 50 grams per day depending on one's physical activities and physiological status.
