Focus on climate change

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has assured the nation that though climate change is a global concern, measures under the soon-to-be-submitted National Action Plan will have area specific focus, including effect of global warming on agriculture. Responding to a query by Rajya Sabha member and noted scientist Dr M.S.Swaminathan, who asked whether the government is going to conduct any study on the effect of global warming on agriculture productivity and pattern, keeping in mind both crop specific and agro-climatic division specific effects, Dr Singh said that the issue is of great national significance and is being given due importance. He said the National Action Plan is being prepared to deal with the issue of effects of global warming, including remedial measures for mitigating the impact on food grains production. Dr Swaminathan asked the government whether it is formulating any contingency plans for dealing with impact of environment change on specific crops like potato and wheat. Stating that charity begins at home, the noted scientist suggested that global warming is going to affect each and every aspect of life, therefore, the action plan should also focus on specific areas and how the country will deal with the situation.
