BHUBANESWAR: All set to launch the Rs 2- a-kg BPL rice scheme from August 1, the State Government today decided to issue temporary ration cards by July 25 to those beneficiaries who have lost their cards. A high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik discussed the modalities of delivery of the specially subsidised rice to the beneficiaries and major part of the discussion was on how to check diversion from the public distribution system (PDS). The district collectors have been instructed to ensure that temporary ration cards are issued to BPL families who figured in the list prepared as per 1997 survey but are going without ration cards. Since the Government is in the process of issuing fresh ration cards, BPL families having no ration cards will be issued temporary cards, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Manmohan Samal told this website's newspaper. However, new BPL families as per the 2002 list will not be considered for new ration cards. Over 50 lakh families in the State are BPL card holders. In an exception for the undivided KBK districts, the Government will also provide rice to APL card holders at Rs 2 a kg. Sources, however, said that the Government is still undecided about inclusion of new BPL families. The Government may reconsider the issue after the trust vote of the UPA Government at the Centre, sources added. Panchayati Raj Minister Raghunath Mohanty, Women and Child Development Minister Pramila Mallik, Chief Secretary Ajit Tripathy and senior officials were present at the meeting.
