Four-day workshop on biotechnology begins

The four-day workshop on biotechnology organized jointly by the Biotechnology Department of Guru Charan College and Jagadish Bose, National Research Talent Search, Kolkata and sponsored by DoNER began today in the auditorium of the college. Prof. GD Sharma, Pro Vice-Chancellor of Assam University, inaugurated the workshop. In his keynote address, Prof. Partho Deb Ghosh of Kalayani University, West Bengal, speaking about the current scenario of biotechnology in the 21st century said, this branch of science has come to play an important part in every sphere of life as it has become a part of man's scientific process of thought. He said that the North- east is full of natural resources with biodiversity regions that provide immense opportunity for study and research on varied plants and animals. Prof. Ghosh called upon the participating students from different schools and colleges to involve themselves more actively to benefit from the workshop and enrich their mind with relevant inputs. It is they, he said, who can make the best application of biotechnology in the larger interest of the academic world. Prof. Bibhash Deb of the Biotechnology Department of GC College acted as the coordinator of the meeting.
