The price of petrol has gone up by Rf1 per litre and the price for a litre of diesel has been increased by Rf2.95, the State Trading Organization (STO) has said. A statement issued by STO, the largest fuel supplier in Maldives, said that with the changes brought about on Friday the price of a litre of petrol will now be Rf13.25 and a diesel litre will now cost 15.50. This is the first time in the last 10 years that the price of petrol and diesel has gone above a dollar. The last time the price of petrol had been changed by STO was on the 7th of last month. That time also petrol prices had gone up by Rf1. The price of diesel was last changed on 13th of last month; a price hike of Rf1.25. According to the statement issued by STO the price changes had been brought about because they would incur a loss of around Rf26.2 million if they continued to sell their latest oil shipment at the earlier prices due to the changes in world oil prices. STO said that they had incurred a loss of Rf9.8 million by the end of last Friday.
