The countdown has begun for chopping three more trees on the ITO - Delhi Gate stretch in order to facilitate the expansion of the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) corridor. The "massacre of the greens" on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg would add to the 10,000 trees felled earlier. Cocking a snook at the Government's order stalling further expansion of the corridor, construction work continues unabated. Transport Commissioner RK Verma's explanation for the ongoing BRT activity at BSZ Marg was that it was just "levelling work" to restore pavements. When completed, the construction would be stopped along the entire stretch. However, contrary to the claims of DIMTS and Transport Department, concrete segregations meant for the bus and cycle tracks were being cemented opposite MAMC. The expansion work, being carried out in parts, is almost complete and half the stretch is ready. "The work near Khooni Darwaza is almost complete. The cementing has been done and now we are levelling the site ahead. The site mapping on the road opposite the Indian Express building has also been completed," said Jitendra Kumar, a worker carrying out the survey. Even labourers working at the expansion site had no clue about the Government's plan to halt the work. "I have been working here for two days now. We have not received any order to halt the work. In fact, we intend to work on the corridor till its completion," said Ram Das, a labourer working on the BSZ stretch.
