Hill garden to get UN funds for organic tea

Ambootia tea garden (Kurseong), Sept. 18: A UN body will partially fund three pilot projects worth $4 million in India for creating a scientific system for cultivation of organic black tea. Till date, organic tea plantation in India is based on a trial and error method, without any set procedures. The Common Fund for Commodities (CFC), an inter-governmental financial institution of the United Nations based in Amsterdam, has decided to fund the projects following a recommendation from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), Rome. The projects entail setting up of model estates in Ambootia in Kurseong, Maud in Dibrugarh (Assam) and Waterfall in the Nilgiris. The CFC will provide 40 per cent of the project cost to be given as loan and grant. The rest will be borne by the Tea Board of India through its tea development scheme. However, within the tea board
