The IMD, on Thursday, issued a cyclone warning to the ports and fishermen on the Maharashtra-Goa coast for a period 24 hours, ending Friday 1 pm. The IMD office website advised fishermen "not to go out in the sea during the next 24 hours'. Explaining that the sea would be very rough with south-easterly waves, the website warned, "Winds will be of speed 45-55 kmph, temporarily reaching 65 kmph in gusts.' Dr C V V Bhadram, Deputy Director General of IMD, Mumbai said, "A low pressure on the Arabian Sea on Wednesday has developed into a depression today causing the winds to pitch up in the coastal Goa-Maharashtra belt. On Thursday, we measured winds at around 43 kmph. Areas like Ratnagiri, Goa, Colaba (in Mumbai) are witnessing the strong gusts.' The depression is said to have formed about 800 km south-west of Mumbai. The website says, "The system is likely to intensify further and move in a north-westerly direction initially.' However, Bhadram said, "Once the depression shifts, the winds will slow down again.'
