Italy has bulldozed the United Nations into agreeing to switch a world food summit from Rome to another location, probably elsewhere in Italy, which can be defended from anti-globalisation protests. The UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, made a surprise climbdown at the weekend only days after insisting it would be unjustified and unauthorised to move the November meeting.
