KMSS stages protest in Sivasagar

SIVASAGAR: Continuing its protest against construction of mega dams at the site of Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Power Project, Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS), the Sivasagar district unit led by its district general secretary Raju Gogoi, advisor Lu-chun-Shyam Gohain, publicity secretary Jadumoni Bora and Nari Mukti Sangram Samiti, Sivasagar district president and sister of the peasant leader Akhil Gogoi, Ambika Gogoi Saikia today, led a procession from the Boarding Field here to Sivasagar DC Court, and staged a dharna demanding immediate halt to the construction of the dam.
Over fifty KMSS activists, marched to the DC Court with banners and placards and shouted anti-government slogans to register their protest.
KMSS district advisor Lu-chun-Shyam Gohain addressed the protesters before submitting a memorandum to the Assam Chief Minister through the Deputy Commissioner.
Terming the police atrocities on the anti-mega dam protestors at Ghagornagar in Lakhimpur district as ‘undemocratic’, Gohain said, “On May 11, anti-dam protesters were assaulted by police and CRPF personnel at a camp at Ghagornagar in Lakhimpur district. The camp was dismantled. But the matter turned worse when five female protesters were attacked by male police personnel and twenty protesters were jailed.”
The protestors also demanded an immediate end to these atrocities and to reconstruct the Ghagornagar camp of the agitationists.
It needs mentioning that the KMSS is running the anti-mega dam stir in Lakhimpur in association with organizations like the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba-Chatra Parishad, Takam Mishing Poring Kebang, All Tai Ahom Students’ Union, All Assam Deuri Students’ Union, Sonowal Kachari Jatiya Parishad, Chutiya Jati Chatra Santha, and Anuchuchita Jati Chatra Santha.
