Sending warning signals to the UPA Government, the Left and UNPA leaders on Saturday came together to attack it on the issue of price rise. They also courted arrest. The leaders, including CPI(M)'s Sitaram Yechury, CPI's D Raja, RSP's Abani Roy, Samajwadi Party General Secretary Amar Singh, were arrested while marching towards the Prime Minister's Office to hand over a memorandum. Making it clear that the issue of price rise would be effectively used to float a common policy platform, the Left and UNPA leaders threatened to intensify their agitation. Earlier, at a seminar organised jointly by the two, the leaders spoke against the Government's economic policies and its "apathy' towards the common man. Addressing the seminar, CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat alleged the Government was not serious about addressing the threat posed by inflation. Karat urged the Government to take urgent steps to curb inflation. "If the UPA Government refuses to heed our pleas, we will be left with no option but to intensify our struggle,' he added. Similar views against the Government were expressed by UNPA leaders Chandrababu Naidu, Mulayam Singh Yadav, Om Prakash Chautala, Farooq Abdullah and CPI general secretary A B Bardhan. All of them demanded strengthening of the public distribution system, effective implementation of the Essential Commodities Act, crackdown to check hoarding and a ban on futures trading on foodgrains. Later, Yechury stopped short of threatening to pull out of the Government. "Our agenda is to check price rise. If the Congress doesn't listen to our demands, we will intensify our agitation and things will get worse,' Yechury said. The UNPA includes the Samajwadi Party, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP).
