The conductor noticed smoke coming out of the rear of the vehicle and asked the driver to stop the bus The passengers of a low-floor Delhi Transport Corporation bus had some scary moments on Saturday evening when their bus caught fire in Delhi cantonment area. The incident, seventh of its kind in the past three weeks, has again raised questions about operating the low floor fleet of buses on city roads, which, the bus manufacturer said, are not suited for them. Police officials said the incident took place in southwest Delhi and the passengers and the bus staff had a narrow escape and no one was hurt. The bus, which was plying on the route leading to Uttam Nagar, caught fire at around 10.45 pm on Saturday near Delhi cantonment area. However, no one was injured in the incident. The police said the conductor of the bus noticed smoke coming out of the rear of the vehicle and asked the driver to stop the vehicle and evacuate passengers. "I immediately stopped the bus near Pankha Road and asked the passengers to get down. However, the doors of the bus were jammed. The passengers then forcibly opened the doors and we escaped from the bus. When I tried to move the bus, the tyres were also jammed," Ram Kumar, the driver of the bus said. The incident is the seventh of its kind in the past three weeks when a bus running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has caught fire. The Delhi government has instituted inquiries into all such incidents and has also imposed a hefty fine of Rs 4 crores on Tata Motors, the manufacturer of the lowfloor buses, for lack of proper maintenance of the buses. The Sheila Dikshit government also decided to withhold a payment of Rs 150 crores to the Tatas and has warned the auto major of legal action if proper steps were not taken by it to prevent such incidents from happening. Tata Motors is responsible for maintenance of the bus fleet supplied by it and it has so far provided nearly 800 low-floor buses to the city government.
