National Food Security Scheme to be implemented in State on July 1

The Department of Food and Civil Supply is all set to implement the National Food Security Scheme (NFSS) from July 1. Around 96 per cent out of a total of 10, 83, 978 new ration cards have been distributed among intended beneficiaries of the NFSS in the State, said State principal secretary, Food and Civil Supply, Radha Raturi on Wednesday. “The district officers have already been directed to complete the distribution of these ration cards soon so that the scheme can be implemented from July 1,” she added. A department officer said that a total of 1, 90, 926 persons who procured ration cards from the department under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) will be covered under NFSS. Once this scheme comes into effect, the intended beneficiaries in various parts of the State will receive food grains at highly subsidised rates. According to departmental data about 97 per cent of the new ration cards have been made by the department officials out of which 96.28 per cent have been distributed among the beneficiaries so far. Dehradun district has made around 100 per cent new ration cards out of which 94.84 per cent have been distributed. In Haridwar district, 100 per cent of new ration cards were distributed while 98.17 per cent were distributed in Tehri Garhwal, 100 per cent each in Uttarkashi, Chamoli, Almora and Champawat; 94.73 per cent in Rudraprayag, 88.85 per cent in Pauri, 90.12 per cent in Nainital, 92.96 per cent in Pithoragarh, 86.47 per cent in Bageshwar and 94.72 per cent in Udham Singh Nagar. Under the scheme, intended beneficiaries would get five kilos of food grain comprising three kilos of rice and two kilos of wheat per person for Rs three and Rs two per kg respectively. Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Antyodaya card holders were included in the scheme and the Above Poverty Line (APL) section with a monthly income of not more than Rs 15,000 will also benefit after receiving new ration cards under the scheme. About 62 per cent of the State’s poor would be covered under the scheme. The rest would be covered under a similar State Government run scheme from July 1.
