NEIST releases technology on toxic-free mosquito repellant sticks

The North East Institute of Science and Technology released the technology for making mosquito repellent incense sticks for commercial production to a Sivasagar-based Agro Industry on the occasion of the observation of National Technology Day here, today. "Clean Out is a herbal agarbati made from indigenous plant materials and is totally free from hazardous chemical constituents,' a scientist of NEIST related while handing over the technology to Shamsul Haque of Premier Agro Products, Sivasagar. This low cost preparation provides mosquito free environment in a region where Malaria kills many people annually and is a scourge,' he further said. "Mosquito repellents currently used for domestic purpose are mainly synthetic products with high mammalian toxicity. They are mostly synthetic pyrethroids which are less harmful than general insecticides but still not totally safe for prolonged use,' the scientist further said. One stick may be used for 10x15 room and the doors and windows should be kept closed after the incense sticks burn out. Another technology which was handed over to R K Birendra Singh, proprietor of Messrs Aroma Health care, Manipur, was a Liquid Deoderant Cleaner for cleaning floors, tiles and table tops.
