The Leader of the Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Jagdish Mukhi, on Tuesday charged that the Sheila Dikshit Government had not kept its promise of providing 25 kg of wheat and 10 kg of rice per month to ration card holders and only managed to supply them 13 to 14 kg of wheat and 5 to 6 kg of rice. Terming this a ''failure' of the Delhi Government, the BJP leader said the inability of the administration to provide sufficient rations to the poor and the downtrodden had had an adverse impact on their financial health in these times of high inflation and soaring prices. "Two months ago the Delhi Government had made tall promises to Delhiities and announced a policy of providing 25 kg wheat and 10 kg rice per month to the card holders having an annual income of less than Rs 1 lakh,' Prof. Mukhi said, adding that the Delhi Government had also spent lakhs of rupees on installation of hoardings and distributing handbills to inform people about the scheme. But after people spent their hard-earned money on getting their ration cards stamped as Above Poverty Line cards, he said, the Delhi Government issued an order in April curtailing the quantity of ration to 15 kg wheat and 7 kg of rice instead. Worse still, he said, the Government managed to supply only 13 to 14 kg of wheat and 5 to 6 kg of rice for the month of May. The BJP leader has also questioned the logic behind warning people of action now in case they had submitted wrong information for getting their ration cards made. "It would be better if the Delhi Government seeks more allocation of rations from the Centre and concentrates on improving the distribution system,' he added.
