Re 1 rice cooks up stink

It is not fit for consumption. When the rice is boiled, a foul smell emanates, which makes one nauseous, says farmer Tirunelveli A GROUP of farmers from Ooththumalai in Tirunelveli district came to the Collectorate here on Friday to return the rice purchased from ration shops under the 1 kg rice for Re 1 scheme. The rice was of poor quality and unfit for consumption, they said. The State Government launched the scheme on September 15 and the distribution of rice started in the district the next day . About 16,537 tonnes of rice was to be sold every month to 8,41,255 family cardholders through 1,235 ration shops, including 927 fulltime shops and 308 part-time shops, in the district.
