Pune, August 19 In a major relief to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the Union government on Tuesday approved Rs 511 crore additional funds for roadwork, including BRTS, being implemented under JNNURM. Of this, the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) roads get Rs 165 crore though there are only about 50 days to go for its inaugural day. "The Union government has approved the revised estimation proposal of the PMC with additional funds of Rs 511 crore,' Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale told The Indian Express from Delhi. The additional funds include Rs 269 crore for the first phase of the BRTS, Rs 40 crore for the BRTS pilot project and Rs 37 crore for the development of Alandi Road. The civic body was facing a shortage of funds to carry on the development work, the mayor said adding that the Union government's decision would help speed up the work. The PMC had justified the increase in project cost, saying the provisions of laying service lines, developing tracks for cycle and pedestrians were not considered in the earlier plan. The project cost had increased from Rs 800 crore to Rs 1,300 crore. "These additional funds will ensure the development of BRTS in a more integrated manner,' Bhosale said. The integrated project will have pedestrian ways, parking lots, cycle tracks and subways on the BRTS routes. The proposed Metro rail project will cost at least Rs 15,000 crore. So BRTS is the best possible alternative public transport system, she said. "Now, there is no need for the civic body to seek funds from other institutions, including the World Bank, " Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi said. The city unit of Congress claimed that it was only due to the regular follow-up by their party leader and city MP Suresh Kalmadi that the additional funds came through. "The credit for getting the funds exclusively goes to Kalmadi. It was only after his intervention that the Union government approved the funds proposed by the civic administration,' city Congress chief Abhay Chhajed said.
