A student of CT Institute of Engineering, Management and Technology, Jalandhar, (CTIEMT) demonstrated a car designed by him made from recycled waste parts collected from a junkyard. After one and a half month's hard work, what emerged was a full fledged car named Blitz. The mastermind behind the design is Varun Saini, who was helped and guided by the faculty and as well as the management of CTIEMT. "It has an 800 cc engine, with maximum speed of 90 km, and gives mileage of 15 to 16 km per litre on a plain road with a fuel tank of 36 litres,' Saini said, adding that it cost him about Rs 1.6 lakh, which was fully sponsored by the management. While revealing more about the car, he said that the body used in this car was of Fiat Uno, the front axle from Mahindra, the rear axle from Omni Van, headlights and taillights were taken from Sonalika Rhino, the front bumper was from Rhino and the rear from Zen, steering was taken from Maruti Gypsi, footrest from Tata Sumo, accelerator pedals from Fiat Uno, break, clutch from Omni car and interior dashboard, glove compartment also from Fiat Uno. "I drove this car on the road for more than 2,000 km to test its temperature, which came as normal,' he said. His father Ramesh Kumar said Varun, who hails from Himachal, had this dream from childhood to design his own car, as he assisted him in his workshop. Asked about the patent of the car designed by him, Saini said very soon he would apply to the concerned authorities for the same. "Our engineering students are now working on a project where a petrol car will also run on diesel,' Manhar Arora, director of corporate relations, CT Group of Institutions said.
