MADRID – A reported 22.2 percent of people residing in Spain live below the poverty line, earning less than 7,961 euros ($8,676) annually, according to data from a survey conducted by the National Statistics Institute, or INE.
Data showed the situation was worse for those under 16 years old, of whom poverty affects almost 30.1 percent, according to the survey conducted in spring 2014 based on average household incomes in 2013.
By nationality, the most impoverished people are foreigners from outside the European Union at 55.4 percent, followed by EU citizens at 35.7 percent, while 18.4 percent of Spaniards live under the poverty line.
The situation in the country has left 10.2 percent of households unable to keep up with payments for mortgage, rent, gas, electricity and municipal fees.
Meanwhile, thanks to the stability of their pensions, the poverty rate among people over 65 years old fell, at 11.4 percent.
