The transport department is planning to create a third lane in the second stretch of the first BRT corridor from Moolchand to Delhi Gate without cutting trees. Also, the IIT-Delhi has been assigned the job to develop the design. This was discussed in a meeting held among all the stakeholders of the BRT, including RITES and Delhi integrated multi-modal transport system. "We have given clear instructions as to develop the stretch in such a way that an extra lane for the cars is provided wherever possible without harming the trees," transport commissioner, R.K. Verma said. He also said RITES has been given clear instructions to work out details of the second stretch as to how much civil work has been left and how fast it can be done. The RITES has been given a week's time to prepare the report. Change of the design has been done in view of the shift of the BRT lanes from centre to left side of the road. If the new experiment is successful, the transport department will pursue with this design in other corridors too. While the first part of the BRT, a stretch of 5.8-km from Ambedkar Nagar to Moolchand, has bus corridor in the centre and motor vehicle lanes on sides, the rest of the 8.7-km stretch beyond Moolchand, will have bus lane on either sides of the road. Unlike the original model, the second model will not have kerb-stone dividers to segregate bus and motor vehicle lanes rather it will have plastic cones and yellow lines to indicate segregation. The RITES will also construct bus stands on left sides of the road and undo those constructed on this stretch according to the previous design.
