Like coriander and hyacinths, milk samples too have been found to contain traces of lead (pb) which can cause serious health disorders.
Students of Reva Institute of Science & Management collected milk samples in Bangalore and on the outskirts and subjected them to lab tests.
They collected 25 samples directly from in and around Bangalore City. Of these, three samples collected from Peenya, Hebbagodi and Doddaballapur have shown concentration of lead. Interestingly, the highest concentration of lead among the samples was found in milk drawn from Doddaballapur.
Students of the institute Anuj Ranjan, Sushma Bharti, Ravi Kumar, Alka Kumari, Arun, Kalpana Devi, Girish and Murali took up the research under the guidance of Charan Raj, lecturer in biochemistry. The study has been sponsored by the National Referral Centre for Lead Poisoning in India (NRCLPI), a wing of the Quality Council of India.
Project Coordinator Charan Raj said acid-washed polythene bottles were used to collect samples. On the day of collection itself samples were analysed to detect lead concentration using atomic absorption spectrophotometer at the Aquadiagnostics Water Research and Technology Centre in Bommasandra, an authorised centre to analyse samples.
The centre is equipped with ultra modern equipment to conduct researches. It has been recognised by the Water Quality Association, US.
One satisfactory point is that samples collected in Yelahanka, Doddaladamara, Yeshwanthpur, Banashankari, Hebbal and Vijayanagar have not shown traces of lead.
