National Diabetes Centre of Sri Lanka (NDC) says that nearly two million Sri Lankans suffer form diabetes. According to the International Diabetes Federation's Diabetes Atlas, 8.4% of Sri Lankans currently live with diabetes. By 2025, 10.7% of the population will have the disease. The organization says wrong food habits, obesity, stress, and lack of exercises are the main causes of the disease.
A recent study conducted by the NDC has found that one in five adults in Sri Lanka has either diabetes or pre-diabetes and one-third of those with diabetes are undiagnosed.
Dr. Mahen Wijesuriya, the president of NDC said the number of child diabetic cases is also on the rise.
NDC revealed these facts at a press conference held to announce the events to mark the World Diabetes Day which falls on November 14.
