KOLKATA, Feb. 11: Experts from Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) today visited bird flu-affected areas of the state ahead of the review meeting to be held by the state government to discuss lifting the ban on chicken trading and transportation. A two-member FAO team led by their chief technical advisor today met animal resources department officials and took stock of the situation after the recent outbreak of avian influenza in 13 districts of the state. They also visited flu-affected Budge Budge today and are scheduled to visit Birbhum, Malda, Murshidabad and South Dinajpur where the epidemic had spread. The experts will again meet state government officials on 15 February to assess the situation. Mr Anisur Rahman, state ARD minister, said the FAO would meet with the state officials after visiting the avian influenza affected areas. "They would see whether everything is in order, especially after the culling operation was completed. They would suggest proper steps if they feel some additional measures are required,' said the minister. Meanwhile, two state government departments, health and ARD would meet tomorrow to discuss lifting the prohibition on chicken trading and transportation as mopping and disinfection exercises are nearing its end. The ban was imposed in the state on 5 February. Prior to lifting the ban, a discussion with the Centre would also be held. Mr Rahman today said the director of animal resource department is keeping in touch with the Centre regularly.
