“The more NHPC and NEEPCO construct mega dams in Arunachal Pradesh, the more problems they create in Assam,” said the Siang Indigenous Farmers’ Forum (SIFF).
Talking to newsmen today, SIFF general secretary Tasik Phangkam said: “The floods that have created a havoc in Upper Assam now are an enough an indication that the more mega dams come up in Arunachal, the more problems Assam faces.”
Phangkam said: “Upper Assam has been affected the worst in the current wave of floods as the constricted width of the Subansiri at the site of the Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project has caused overflow of waters that got their ways downstream through various smaller rivers. The future situation which Assam will have to face when Siang Upper Stage II and Siang Upper Stage I will come up in Arunachal Pradesh can be gauged right now. The situation will also deteriorate in Arunachal Pradesh when the two Siang hydroelectric projects, for which MoUs have already been signed, come up the State.”
Phangkam said that the Siang Indigenous Farmers’ Forum, the Siang People’s Forum and the Adi Students’ Union have been staging protest against the move to construct mega dams in Arunachal Pradesh but to little avail.
