    The city district government has decided to remove the greenbelt from both the sides of the Grand Trunk Road to resolve the issue of increasing traffic in the city.

  • School CNG van catches fire, no injuries

    A CNG van, carrying three children of class I and II, caught fire in an accident on Saturday at about 7.15 am in Ghatlodia area. However, the driver stopped the van immediately and rescued all the children before the van was reduced to a metal skeleton. The Maruti Omni van was on its way back after dropping students of Little Flower Primary School in Ghatlodia. It was on its way to drop three children to a nursery nearby. The driver, Ashish Patel, became alert when he smelled of burning electric wires in the van. He quickly stopped the van and took all the children out of it. Within minutes the van caught fire and was engulfed in flames near Heerabaug cross-roads. A fire official present at the spot said, "Once the fire was controlled, we checked the combustion section of the engine. As there was a leakage of lubricating oil, the van caught fire after an electric spark from the spark plug. If the fire had reached the chamber where the gas is filled, the van would have blasted off immediately.'

  • 'Pakistan tops in global CNG industry'

    City Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil has said that attainment of world No 1 position by Pakistan in CNG industry is a matter of pride. She said CNG is a environment-friendly fuel and the city government has started setting up 40 CNG stations at various bus terminals and defunct KTC depots under its management to raise infrastructure prior to arrival of large-sized CNG buses in the metropolis. In the first phase, bids have been invited to set up of five CNG stations to be constructed under public-private partnership. She was talking to a delegation of the CNG Station Owners Association of Pakistan, led by its Chairman Malik Khuda Bux, which met her here on Wednesday. Nasreen pointed out that the City District Government Karachi (CDGK) is focusing on infrastructure improvement on the one hand and taking various steps for environment improvement on the other. She said establishment of model fitness and vehicle testing station is in its priority list. Malik Khuda Bux informed the Nasreen Jalil that there is no shortage of gas in Karachi and Sindh and when gas supplies slumped in the Punjab in winter, Sindh had supplied 47 mcb to that province. At present, Khuda Bux said 1923 CNG stations are in operation in Pakistan and some 1.65 million vehicles are operating on gas out of which 40 percent were in Karachi. In Karachi, he stated, there are 169 filling stations and 22 more were coming up while the city needs 200 stations. He appreciated the development schemes implemented in the metropolis and paid glowing tributes to the CDGK and Haq Parast leadership for carrying out speedy development.   • CNG hike: 100 protesting autorickshaw drivers detained

    Nearly 100 autorickshaw drivers were detained on Monday by Gandhinagar police at Koba circle, when they were heading towards the state Assembly to mark their protest against the recent price hike of CNG. Ashok Punjabi, convenor of Autorickshaw drivers committee said "Since last night 350-400 Autodrivers were detained by the police at Maninagar, Juhapura, Bapunagar and several other places in a wake of our proposed march at the state assembly. Even in reduced numbers, we were determined to storm the state assembly to get our voices heard.' The autorickshaw association, on Monday, reiterated their threat for an indefinite auto-strike from March 3. Earlier, in the afternoon, autorickshaw drivers assembled at Bishop petrol pump in Sabarmati to lead a march towards Gandhinagar. At Koba a huge team of cops detained them and herded them in a ground till the evening before they were allowed to go. "I had been given an appointment by the energy minister, Saurabh Patel for a meeting. However, before I could reach the minister's office he left for the budget session,' added Punjabi who had managed to evade the detentions and reached Gandhinagar. Earlier, the committee members approached CNG filling stations with their problems and demands. He added that a memorandum stating there problems and probable solutions had been handover to the Chief ministers office along with Shaktisinh Gohil, leader of opposition.

  • Diesel, CNG variants of i10 on Hyundai radar

    Hyundai Motors India Ltd (HMIL) is evaluating the feasibility of introducing a diesel and a CNG variant of its compact new offering - i10. The petrol version of the small car is presently being manufactured for domestic and export markets at its recently inaugurated second plant within its existing plant here. The new ultra modern plant would be fully commissioned by 2009, HMIL would be capable of producing 6,00,000 units per year, doubling its present capacity of 3,00,000 units per annum. The new pant has been set up as a global manufacturing hub for all small cars in Hyundai's stable. Ashok Jha, president, HMIL, said presently the new plant running was running a single shift and on an average it was producing 400 cars a day. Around 25,000 units had rolled out ever since the i10 model was launched few months ago. He said Santro, the lowest price in Hyundai's stable, continues to be the most popular model. "We will continue to produce Santro. Depending upon the customers' feedback and surveys, we are constantly improvement wherever required,' Jha stated. HMIL officials confirmed that the new plant had been set up by the leading Korean car manufacturer keeping in mind the growing segment of the small cars, especially after showcasing of Nano by Tata Motors. Already 40 per cent of the cars being rolled up from the existing facility were being exported. Jha was, however, non-committal about the deadline for developing a smaller car than Santro. On the new models to be launched this year, the company has announced to introduce the i20 model in the mid-size segment and Santa Fe in SUV segment. Both products to be rolled out by the end of 2008 would be available in the domestic and export markets. Santa Fe was popular in the US. Hyundai has also decided to phase out the Elantra. The company has invested Rs 1,419 crore in the second plan.

    GAIL India, the country's largest transporter and marketer of natural gas, is looking at the possibility of floating a subsidiary to set up compressed natural gas (CNG) outlets along the highways where it has its pipelines. The company is targeting to become a Rs 50,000 crore company by 2011. The company plans to set up these outlets under its CNG corridor plan and has already identified in the areas Delhi-Agra-Lucknow highway and on the Mumbai-Pune highway.
