  • Miners in east India come together to build road

    Dilip Kumar Jha / Mumbai August 22, 2008, 3:33 IST Miners in eastern India, especially within a radius of 200 km from the Orissa and Jharkhand borders have decided to build a road more than 600 km long, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 300 crore. Approximately, 80 per cent of mines in the two states are in this area.

  • Package plan to salvage crumbling traffic in city

    The caretaker government took a crash course to salvage the crumbling traffic in the capital by evicting illegal possessions on footpaths and roads, constructing safe bus-stops and introducing staggered school timing under a package of measures. Before confronting the problem head-on, the action plans were explained at a high-level meeting on Traffic Congestion in Dhaka City and its Solution at the Chief Adviser's Office on Thursday.

The decision was announced by Deputy Leader of House Ved Prakash Gupta on Wednesday.

  • Mohali trees being axed to pave way for road network

    Mohali, August 19 The Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) is axing trees to pave way for constructing, strengthening, widening and upgrading of the inner and outer roads in the city. Local residents are, however, pained to see how mercilessly the greenery of the city is being murdered. More than 1,500 full-grown trees in different parts of the city are being cut under the project to revamp the road network.

  • Rs 500 crore more on the way to help improve city roads

    Pune, August 19 In a major relief to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), the Union government on Tuesday approved Rs 511 crore additional funds for roadwork, including BRTS, being implemented under JNNURM. Of this, the Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) roads get Rs 165 crore though there are only about 50 days to go for its inaugural day. "The Union government has approved the revised estimation proposal of the PMC with additional funds of Rs 511 crore,' Mayor Rajlaxmi Bhosale told The Indian Express from Delhi.

  • Kolar CMC passes action plan for Rs 551.63 lakh

    DH News Service, Kolar: An action plan to identify and implement various projects for an amount of Rs 551.63 lakh, released under the SFC scheme, was passed unanimously by the members of the Kolar City Municipal Council, at a special meeting organised here on Tuesday. The action plan was created, at the special meeting, which was presided by CMC President Nazeer Ahmad. On the occasion, CMC member S R Muraligowda urged the meeting to earmark an amount of Rs 35 lakh separately for the CMC staff members and the pourakarmikas towards their salaries.

  • Civic body lays plastic-fortified road in Dadar

    Mumbai, August 9 Finding an ecological solution to reuse polythene and plastic waste, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation laid a 100-metre stretch of road at Dadar using plastic and asphalt. This stretch on Prof V S Agashe Road near the Kohinoor Technical Institute in Dadarwas laid by the civic body's Road department with the help of the Indian Centre for Plastics in the Environment (ICPE) . The BMC will test its sustainability for a year and then decide whether to lay an entire stretch of road using waste plastic.

  • Wrecked roads, terminals in coastal Patuakhali

    About 10 lakh inhabitants of six upazilas in Patuakhali district are suffering as half of the 150 km roads connecting the areas is in a deplorable condition. Large potholes on those roads cause nuisance for passengers as buses, loaded trucks and others vehicles often get stuck there while the situation worsens in the monsoon season with rainwater gathering in the holes. Patients become the worst sufferers on the dilapidated roads.

  • Land acquisition and national highways

    The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has embarked on a grand project of four- and/or six-laning of the existing roads to a target of 14,000 km, especially the east-west and north-south corridors. This is a good thing because the country needs proper roads for its development and road construction provides employment. This aspect of development, nevertheless, is also harmful if not managed carefully, because road development requires the basic ingredient of land. People may be displaced or otherwise adversely affected due to land acquisition. (Letters)

  • Roads in bad shape do not belong to MCD: Mayor

    NEW DELHI: Delhi Mayor Arti Mehra has urged Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to look into the miserable condition of roads maintained by the Public Works Department in the Capital. Addressing a press conference here, Ms. Mehra said: "The Chief Minister and her government have criticised the poor maintenance of roads by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. It would be better if they do some introspection on the poor maintenance of roads by the PWD.'
