Scheduled Tribes and Other Traditional Forest Dwellers (Recognition to Rights) Act and Rules 2008 is being implemented in Madhya Pradesh in a time-bound manner. At the review meetings held in New Delhi in February and May in connection with implementation of the Act, the Union government has praised Madhya Pradesh for implementation of the Act and has urged other states to send their teams to Madhya Pradesh to gather information about the ways and methods being adopted in the state for successful implementation.
APPEALS have been made to leave alone the members of one of Brazil's last uncontacted Indian tribes, spotted deep in the Amazon jungle near the Peruvian border. The Indians were sighted and photographed from an aircraft during flights over the rainforest in remote Acre state, said Brazil's National Indian Foundation, known as Funai. Funai said it photographed "strong and healthy" warriors, six huts and a large planted area. The photographs show red-painted tribe members brandishing bows and arrows. Funai said it was not known to which tribe they belonged.

Amnesty International criticized poor working conditions and forced labour in Brazil's fast-growing sugar cane sector on Wednesday, as the government tries to promote the cane-based ethanol industry as a way to reduce poverty. The human rights group said Brazil's government has taken steps to improve working conditions in rural areas, but it has confirmed cases of forced labour throughout the country.
A local detergent product, made by a women's self-help group, has evoked great response in Nagaland encouraging many other SHGs to' emulate their success story. The detergent powder, cheaper than some popular brands of consumer majors and largely popular, is made by a self-help group (SHG) in a village near Dimapur with caustic soda and other locally available materials. Initiated by a few Naga women activists, 'Women Ahead' is now transforming many homes and families in rural Nagaland.
The report, Development Challenges in Extremist Affected Areas, authored by an expert group set up by the Planning Commission, looks at the Naxalite/Maoist movement in a way that is different from the prevalent official attitude and draws attention to many of the positive effects of the movement. The report rejects the official "security-centric' approach in dealing with the movement and instead suggests an "ameliorative approach with emphasis on a negotiated solution'.
Various welfare schemes introduced by forest authorities for the benefit of tribals in the Rampachodavaram Agency region in East Godavari have helped improve their standard of living. A section of tribal youth have even purchased two-wheelers with their earnings. Forest authorities have trained a number of tribal people, mainly youth, in various trades like stitching adda leaves, making bamboo furniture and incense sticks, preparing vermicompost and in the ecotourism project.
