That's the startling finding of a new study that reviewed data on pregnant women in San Francisco who were exposed to high levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a group of banned environmental pollutants, in the 1950s and 1960s. And it's not an isolated finding either, reports ScienceDaily. Similar exposure is thought to have occurred in Wales, after a quarry on the edge of Groesfaen village near Cardiff was used as a toxic dumping ground from 1965 to 1972.

Gilani kicks off tree planting drive
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Sunday launched monsoon tree plantation campaign, dedicating year 2009 to environment protection and greener Pakistan. He kicked off the plantation campaign by planting a sapling of araucaria in the lawns of Prime Minister's House. Talking to newsmen, he symbolised the freshly planted sapling with a tree of democracy which he said grew in the hands of Benazir Bhutto. He said forests covered five percent of the land and would be stretched over 6 percent by 2015.

Hyderabad, July 22: Illegal abattoirs are causing pollution at Amberpet, New Bhoiguda and Gowlipura localities. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation authorities (GHMC) have claimed that over 700 cases were booked in the last three months and Rs 1.5 lakh fine was collected from the violators.

Environmental actions of citizens - Evaluating the submission process of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation of NAFTA
The Citizen Submissions on Enforcement Matters is administered by the North American Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), a trilateral institution established by the governments of Canada, Mexico, and the United States as part of the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC). The CEC received 55 submissions from June 1995 to May 2006, although these remain to be substantially discussed in the literature. This study fills in some of the gaps through an analysis of the submission process from an actor and results based perspective.
