Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is to provide US$ 500,000 to increase rice production in conflict and flood affected districts of Sri Lanka. In a press release yesterday, the FAO said it has approved the funding for the project "Input supply to vulnerable populations under Initiative on Soaring Food Prices" in response to a request by the Sri Lankan government for assistance in combating the soaring food prices. FAO will provide funds to renovate the paddy lands in the troubled areas and will distribute seed paddy to the farmers in those areas.

Haryana Agriculture Minister Harmohinder Singh Chatha said initially it is available at Hafed retail outlet at Chandigarh and Hafed corporate office, Panchkula, Hafed office, Delhi and Hafed retail sale outlet,Taraori, Karnal district. Extracted out of mustard seed grown in certified organic farms in Haryana, Hafed organic mustard oil is available at a price of Rs 61 per bottle in 500 ml packs.
Japan and Europe need to embrace genetically modified wheat to combat food shortages in poor countries, rather than pander to consumer fears, the head of a global wheat research institute said on Wednesday.
