Genetically modified crops can help solve international food crisis faced by many countries including Pakistan, said US Special Advisor on Science and Technology Dr Nina V Fedoroff on Thursday. Talking to reporters at a local hotel, Fedoroff said the international community had ignored important issues like energy and food in the past and was now paying for that negligence. She said the world should try to find both short and long-term solutions to end food problems.

Bangladesh could increase rice productivity from 30 to 60 per cent by using hybrid seeds, improvement of crop management and proper utilisation of fertilizer for attaining food security. "Open Market Sale (OMS) of rice, social safety net programmes and 100 day Employment Guarantee Scheme (EGS) are some of the effective measures taken by the government to ensure food security for the vulnerable people," said Xian Zhu, Country Director of the World Bank yesterday. Food security and productivity enhancement programme of small farmers has been expanded in 1012 villages at a cost of Rs 100 million in Punjab. Official sources told Business Recorder here Sunday that the programme would jointly be carried out by federal, provincial and district governments in Punjab. In Sialkot district, the programme would be carried out in 72 villages and under the programme each village would be provided funds amounting to Rs 1.95 crore for the implementation of the programme while initial work on the project has been initiated in area.

The sale will be conducted after the requirements of buffer and strategic stocks are met. The buffer norm for wheat on April 1 was 4 million tonnes (mt). Creation of a 3 mt strategic stock has also been proposed. The central pool had a wheat stock of 24.38 mt on August 1.
