No quarrying going on in forest area: Panel
A Committee set up by the state government to probe into illegal quarrying of granite, has concluded that no quarrying was going on in the forest area of Kanakapura Taluk. The team led by Principal Secretary to government, Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) Mohamed Sanaulla in its report stated that “no quarrying is going on within 100 metres of the forest area.” In its report, which was submitted to the Chief Minister on March 14 this year, the Sanaulla Committee said the team, after inspecting thoroughly the locations where it was alleged that illegal quarrying was on, found that no quarrying was going on in the forest area of Kanakapura taluk.

Maharashtra leads in drug trial-related deaths
Maharashtra recorded the maximum number of deaths due to serious adverse events (SAEs) during drug trials, while Madhya Pradesh saw the least number of such deaths. According to data disclosed by the Drug Controller-General of India, during the 49-month period (January 2008-January 2012), the country recorded 2,061 drug trial-related deaths. But data has been given only for 1,603 of the 2,061 deaths.

Officers ‘loot’ Palike in the name of felled trees
Axed trees resurface in the record books BBMP’s tree officers are under a cloud following allegations that they siphoned off crores of rupees on the pretext of paying for contract labour to fell trees which had been felled long ago. An RTI query by NGO Civic Bangalore revealed that in 2007, the Palike felled 255 trees on Bellary Road near CBI Junction, Golf Club, near High Grounds police station, Cunningham Road, Windsor Manor, Cauvery Theatre and Balabrooie. Similarly, 199 trees were axed on Hosur-Sarjapur Road and 159 trees in the central zone.

Whistle-blower in Chandrapur mining scam suspended
Vinod Khobragade, the village official ( talathi ) of Baranj village in Chandrapur district of Maharashtra who imposed a fine of Rs. 32 crore on the Karnataka Emta Coal Mines Limited (KECML) for alleged illegal mining, was suspended on Monday. He had also accused the top district officials, including the District Collector, of involvement in the scam. “I have been suspended from service without even a show cause notice. They have suspended me for providing information to the media about the illegal mining scam in Chandrapur,” Mr. Khobragade told The Hindu over phone.
