  • Flood inundates 15 villages

    Spate in Nullah Deg inundated 15 villages of Pasrur tehsil on Sunday, damaging standing crops and forcing locals to shift to safer places. The flood and rainwater spilled out from the banks of nullah after heavy rains in catchment areas of the stream on Saturday night, inundating Hunjali, Jhaatokey, Mehtabpur, Chahoor Kalan, Nawaadey, Jussiwala and some other villages. District Coordination Officer (DCO) Captain Atta Muhammad Khan (retired) said the situation was under control and no loss of life or property was reported from the area as yet.

  • Call to tackle hepatitis on war footing

    District Nazim Kanwar Naveed Jamil has said that hepatitis-B and C are posing a great challenge to the world, including Pakistan, and the issue needs to be tackled on war footing. He was speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a free medical camp set-up at Behram village by Ehasas Welfare Trust here on Sunday. He said used syringes and blades were the root-causes of transfer of hepatitis from one person to another and advised patients to purchase new syringes before going to doctors for injection.

  • Steps urged to prevent fish mortality in rainy season

    In the rainy season every year when the weather remains overcast and the sun rarely shines, dissolved oxygen in fish farms decreases to a lethal level which may cause mass scale fish mortality leading to huge financial losses due to collapse of the fish crop. Director General, Fisheries Punjab Dr Muhammad Ayub told APP here on Sunday that in such circumstances, fish farmers are advised to reduce manuring and feeding to half, especially during the peak rainy season, and to maintain water level up to five feet at least, according to a press release.

  • SCA calls for release of water into channels

    Sindh Chamber of Agriculture (SCA) has called for release of water to the channels, maintaining that due to shortage of water the standing crops are facing destruction. In a meeting, presided over by SCA President Syed Qamar-uz-Zaman Shah here on Sunday, the Chamber called for punitive action against those persons of irrigation department who are allegedly involved in corruption and are using negative tactics aimed at creating problems for the growers.

  • Punjab to spend Rs 1.21 billion on agriculture research

    The Senior Punjab Minister, Raja Riaz Ahmad has said Rs 1.21 billion will be used to promote agricultural research in the current fiscal year. He told in a workshop on 'agricultural productivity' in a hotel on Saturday that research and development in the agricultural sector was the need of the hour and his government was encouraging stakeholders, especially the private sector, to help promote research activities in this field.

  • Plan to set up ethanol plant near Faisalabad

    Sugar Cane Grower's Association (SCGA) has submitted a plan to the Government of Punjab for the setting up a 1000-1200 tons crushing per day (TCD) ethanol plant from sugarcane juice at Mamoo Kanjan, in district Faisalabad. The cost of setting up the plant would be around $10 million, which would produce around 2.0 mw electricity because of high pressure steam technology.

  • Pakistani scientist evolves extra long grain hybrid rice variety

    For the first time in country, private sector, after two-year successful trial based on seven-year field research, have evolved a new variety of "extra long grain hybrid rice with better yield. Prominent scientist Dr Ghulam Mustafa Avesi, who had already developed a total of five new varieties of hybrid rice during the last seven years in collaboration with Yuan Longping Hi of Tech Agriculture Company, China, (the world's largest hybrid rice seed producers).

  • New irrigation policy being introduced in Punjab

    Punjab Senior Minister, Raja Riaz Ahmad has said that the third party consultant policy was being introduced in the irrigation department under the reform agenda so that transparency in developmental, financial and administrative matter could be ensured. He said this while inspecting the ongoing development work for the rehabilitation of Burala branch canal near Jaranwala on Saturday.

  • CNG stations fleece consumers by Rs 4.75 billion in 20 days

    The CNG station owners here have fleeced the consumers by Rs 4.75 billion since July 1, 2008, as the whole industry is in the state of disorder. Though the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) had recommended to regulate the CNG tariff at Rs 43.25 per kg and to take stern action against those CNG stations owners who were involved in overcharging price or any other violation, the Ordinance in this regard has not yet been amended.

  • Probe into mangroves destruction ordered

    Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfiqar Ali Mirza, who also holds the portfolio of forests, has directed the forest secretary to intensify the efforts to check illegal felling of trees and illegal transportation of timber to protect forestry and environment.
