  • Growers demand judicial inquiry into canal breach

    The Abadgar Action Committee on Friday criticised continuation of the water rotation programme even after improved water level in the river and demanded a judicial inquiry into the Rohri Canal breach, which inundated hundreds of acres of land and several villages. The committee chairman, Allah Bachayo Zounr, said at a news conference at the press club that the water rotation programme in the Massu sub-division despite availability of enough water in the river had caused huge losses to growers.

  • Disaster management cell set up in Mansehra

    The Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (Erra) has established the first ever Disaster Risk Reduction Management Cell here on Friday. District Coordinator Officer (DCO) Israr Khan inaugurated the cell during a ceremony. Speaking on the occasion he appreciated establishment of the cell and said that after the October 8, 2005 earthquake, it was need of the hour to train people to cope with natural calamities. The DCO said that Mansehra was a high-risk district where floods and landsliding were common following the devastating earthquake.

  • CNG to be sold at Rs43.68

    The CNG will be sold at governmental rates of Rs43.68 per kilogramme at all private outlets in the district. This was decided at the meeting of the representatives of district administration and CNG association's office-bearers here on Friday. Deputy District Officer (revenue) Rao Imtiaz Ahmed told Dawn the district government was taking note of complaints by the CNG consumers about overcharging.

  • Rawalpindi braces for dengue outbreak

    The district health department has said that Rawalpindi is so far safe from dengue as all possible measures have been taken to control the mosquito-borne infection in urban and suburban areas. Executive District Officer (EDO) Health Dr Zafar Iqbal Gondal told Dawn that broad application of insecticides using portable and truck-mounted machines was being carried out in the district to prevent mosquito breeding. He said mapping of areas in and around the city had been carried based on the experience of last year when six cases of dengue fever were reported to hospitals in Rawalpindi.

  • PPCBL extends loan issuance date

    With a view to facilitating the member farmers of the co-operative societies, Punjab Provincial Co-operative Bank Ltd (PPCBL) has extended the date for issuance of loans for the Kharif 2008 crop to July 31. Registrar co-operatives Punjab Malik Hassan Iqbal said here on Friday that by July 15. The bank had issued loans amounting over Rs 2.26 billion to 95,248 members/farmers of 13,053 co-operative societies, according to a press release here on Friday. Iqbal said the PPCBL has so far achieved 90.6 percent recovery of its Rabi 2007-08 loans, amounting Rs 2.25 billion.

  • Minister highlights government role in agriculture sector

    Pakistani agriculture is facing numerous challenges that are hampering agricultural productivity and it is the mission of agricultural scientists to find ways to increase agriculture production in the country, said Malik Ahmad Ali Aulakh, Minister for Agriculture Punjab. Addressing agriculture scientists, farmers, and trainers at a training workshop held at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, the minister said that the Punjab Government is formulating a comprehensive, sustainable and dynamic policy to make agriculture profitable in the current situation.

  • LPG price fixed at Rs 63 per kg

    The City District Government Lahore (CDGL) and the LPG Distributors Association (LPGDA) on Friday sorted out the LPG price issue and fixed the retail rate at Rs 63 per kilogramme and Rs 743 per 11.8-kilogramme cylinder. District Co-ordination Officer Sajjad Bhutta taking action on rickshaw union's application had convened a meeting of stakeholders to discuss the price issue.

    NWFP Senior Minister Rahimdad Khan said here on Friday that provincial government was working on a broad-based strategy to take full advantage of water resources of Chitral for benefits of people. Talking to journalists after offering fateha for the departed soul of IUCN NWFP Head, Shazada Shujaur Rehman who died the other day.

  • Sindh to raise water theft issue with Irsa

    The issue of theft of water from the Indus, between Chashma Barrage (in Punjab) and Guddu Barrage (in Sindh), with the help of pumping machines will be taken up in the next Indus River System Authority meeting, said Sindh Irrigation Minister Jam Saifullah Dharejo on Thursday. Talking to journalists at the irrigation rest house, he said that he had written a letter to Federal Minister for Water and Power Pervez Ashraf regarding water shortage in Sindh and requested closure of Chashma-Jhehlum Link Canal which the minister had accepted accordingly.

  • Islamabad hospitals put on alert: Another dengue case confirmed

    The health ministry on Thursday put hospitals in the capital on alert as one more positive case of dengue fever was confirmed by National Institute of Health and vowed to prevent the disease from becoming a serious threat to public health this year. The second dengue fever case is also being treated at Polyclinic Hospital. The first case was reported on Wednesday when a Frontier Constabulary jawan Jannas Khan tested positive and became the first case of this season.
