  • CNG-run buses keep charging higher

    CNG-run city service buses have continued flouting government order for not increasing the fares on the pretext of CNG price increase as they have already been charging between Tk 2 and Tk 5 more on various routes. Passengers on Sunday complained the CNG-run buses had continued taking increased fares they started charging after the April 25 price increase. The government on Saturday revised upwards the fares for CNG-run auto-rickshaws and taxi cabs, but kept CNG-run buses out of the process because of their higher profitability compared with buses run on diesel.

  • Acute water crisis in Comilla town

    Acute water crisis plagues life at different parts of the Comilla municipality due to the drastic fall in the ground water level. The residents of the town alleged they had been facing acute water crisis over the past four days while the authorities so far were yet to take proper initiative to reduce the crisis. They alleged that they were receiving scanty amount of water in the pipeline of the municipality as the authorities were supplying one-third of the total amount of water they needed.

  • PKSF seminar suggests low-cost tech to fight poverty

    Private sector entrepreneurs and technology experts on Sunday suggested promotion of low-cost technology, particularly in agriculture sector, to fight poverty and increase productivity. They said a huge number of people in rural areas were still unaware of low-cost technologies which could increase their earning and productivity saving time and labour while steps were needed to popularise such machinery in a coordinated manner.

    Rahimafrooz on Thursday announced introduction of Lucas Hybrid CNG and Spark Taxi CNG batteries made for CNG fuelled vehicles in Bangladesh. Yeamin Sharif Chowdhury, general manager of marketing, Jasim Uddin Sarker, national sales manager and Md Mokhlesur Rahman, marketing manger of Tyre of Rahimafrooz Distribu-tionLimited spoke at a press conference on the launching of the CNG batteries, held in the Dhaka city, said a press release.

The government on Thursday said the fares of CNG-run three wheelers and taxi cabs would soon be revised upward, but the CNG-run buses and trucks would not be allowed to increase fares as they had already been charging high fares.

  • 4 children die in India after getting measles vaccinations

    Four children died in southern India after getting measles vaccinations at state-run clinics and the state has suspended use of the vaccine, health officials said Thursday. It was not yet clear exactly what caused the deaths, said Tamil Nadu state's director of public health, P Padmanabhan. Vaccine samples have been sent to a government-run laboratory for investigations, he said.

  • Careless disposal of medical waste causes health hazard

    Less than 20 per cent of Dhaka's public and private healthcare establishments, including hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres have, so far, been covered by the medical waste management system to protect public health from hazardous medical wastes. The private hospitals, clinics and pathological centres in Dhaka are producing around 400 tonnes of medical waste a day and most of the risky garbage are being disposed of in sewer and open spaces, sources said.

  • Water crisis turns acute in Rajshahi

    Water crisis has turned acute in the Rajshahi city due to frequent power outages and sharp decline in the groundwater level, causing immense sufferings to the city residents. The Rahjshahi City Corporation is now producing only 106 lakh gallons of water against the demand for 226 lakh gallons, according to corporation sources. Due to frequent load shedding and voltage fluctuation, the corporation cannot operate all its 46 pumps at a time to lift water for supply in the city areas.

  • FBCCI proposes formation of food security council

    The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday proposed to establish a National Food Security Council for planning and monitoring the production and supply of major food items. The leaders of the FBCCI, country's apex trade body, made the proposal when they called on chief adviser of the military backed interim government Fakhruddin Ahmed at the latter's office. During the meeting, they also put forward some recommendations for expediting the businesses growth and creating employments in the country.

  • Diarrhoea patients fill hospitals as summer gets hotter

    The sweltering summer heat has continued to send more people, mainly children and elderly, suffering from diarrhoea and crowding hospitals in Dhaka city and other parts of the country. A two-year girl, Ria Moni, of Narayanganj died Tuesday on way to ICDDR,B hospital at Mohakhali in Dhaka, her family said. At least one person died and 11,861 others infected with diarrhoea in past seven days, according to the control room of the health directorate that complies reports from public hospitals in districts.
