Republic of Malawi: Rural Livelihoods Economic Enhancement Programme
The Rural Livelihoods and Economic Empowerment Programme (RLEEP) has laid a good foundation for pro-poor value chain development. Small-scale farmers have increased their awareness that farming is a business. A number of useful partnerships were built and promising initiatives started. This includes the Farm Radio Trust, which was highly effective in providing access to information, the commodity platforms, which are addressing key value chain governance issues, and microfinance organizations, which provide critical access to finance. Towards the end, the programme also introduced tools, such as warehouse receipts, to facilitate farmers’ access to markets.
