The Supreme Court on Friday issued notice to the Delhi Development Authority, the Delhi Government and the Commonwealth Games Committee on an application for a direction to them to re-locate the sports stadiums to be constructed near Siri Fort auditorium to some other site as it involved cutting of over 1,000 trees. The application wanted them to ensure that any site selected should be such as to cause minimum disruption to the environment, and if such new sites involved felling of trees, it should be done only after obtaining permission from the Supreme Court.
Over the next 10 years, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is going ahead with ambitious plans to plant a forest along Tokyo Bay, increase the number of tree-lined streets, plant grass in parks, and all the while encourage community involvement in a bid to nurture a "green movement." Tokyo's Big Change: the 10-year plan, which was laid out in 2006, responds to growing environmental concerns worldwide and aims to boost the capital's image as it prepares to bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics.
Ignorant villages beat a male dolphin to death and grievously injured another female dolphin in the Sharda canal in Nagram village, on the outskirts of Lucknow. The dolphins had strayed into the canal and the villagers mistook it for some "killer fish" and beat it with rods. One of the villagers then put the dead dolphin on a wheel cart and was towing it away when the Nagram police caught him. The man has been taken into custody. The Nagram police informed the forest officials who then sent the dead dolphin for post-mortem.
In an effort to reduce the production and use of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) pesticides from polluting the atmosphere and harming human lives, India has initiated a National Implementation Plan. Being a signatory to the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, a national plan sensitising different stakeholders about the obligations of India as a party to the convention and to develop strategies and action plans for the reduction and elimina tion of the target chemicals. The Stockholm Convention has come into force in India in 2006.
In a desperate move, Madhya Pradesh government has written to all the zoos in the country to spare Asiatic lions for Kuno-Palpur National Park, where lions from Gir were to be shifted. Senior officials of Gujarat forest department revealed that they had received a letter asking for lions from any of the zoos here, especially from Sakarbaugh Zoo in Junagadh where lions are brought for treatment. Officials said that after Gujarat Government said no, MP government has decided to acquire at least six lions from different zoos in the country.
The unabated illegal felling of valuable trees is threatening the existence of Dibru Saikhowa, a biosphere reserve in Tinsukia district. Sources said that mediapersons yesterday recovered 25 logs which have been illegally felled and kept hidden in Kaliapani ghat of river Guijan near Natun gaon under Guijan PS some 10 kms away from Tinsukia. The local people have alleged that the logs are illegally brought from Dibru Saikhowa and Dangari and have been kept concealed under water hyacinth.
Authorities in India's remote northeast said they were increasing security in the world's biggest reserve for the endangered great one-horned rhinoceros to save them from poachers. Poachers have killed at least 10 rhinos in two national parks in Assam state since January, eight of them at the Kaziranga National Park. "We are increasing the number of guards in Kaziranga because of a recent increase in poaching, and a probe has also been ordered," Rockybul Hussain, Assam's forest minister told Reuters on Wednesday.

The much-maligned Sariska Tiger Reserve in Alwar district of Rajasthan is going to get back its flagship species soon. Four years after the disappearance of its famous tigers, the reserve is getting ready now for re-introduction of the animal. Much deliberations and some ground level action, including shifting of at least one of the forest villages inside the reserve and improvement in the habitat, have gone into the preparations for the pioneering act, which would have few parallels in the world's conservation history.
Banajutshna, a nature organisation of Golaghat district has expressed its deep anguish over the ruthless and cold-blooded killing of the rhinos by poachers in the Kaziranga National Park. It is also equally disturbing that killings of rhinos as well as removal of its horns have become a regular feature in the KNP almost every year. It is high time the government of Assam, should publish a white paper on rhino poaching as early as possible. The united effort of the Forest department and public may solve the problem.

With saw-millers not willing to supply timber at the new commercial rate fixed by the government in January, Trashigang is facing a timber shortage. Saw-millers in the dzongkhag Kuensel spoke to said they had stopped supplying timber as they had been losing money in the business. They said that business had become erratic ever since the government's new timber pricing policy came into effect. Ever since the new rule came into force, not many saw-millers have attended the logging auctions held once a month in Mongar. Most sawmills are out of logs.

According to officials of ministry of environment and forest, the park authorities received some information about dubious movements of a person from Bawariya tribe in a particular area following which they informed the WCCB. The particular area is home to three tigers of the park, officials said, adding that the person had been detained and was now in the judicial custody.

According to the data there are over 18 lakh trees in Mumbai. The civic body has said that the figure indicates an increase in the green cover over the last five years. However, the figures could also be attributed to the new parameter of measurement which categorizes a 4 feet high sapling with a diameter of 4 meter as a tree. The civic body will provide cash incentives to citizens to increase the green cover of the city.
