Inaugurating the new Shahdara-Dilshad Garden line of the Delhi Metro on Tuesday, Union Urban Development Minister Jaipal Reddy acknowledged that the metro railway was an example of public transport worth emulating. Citing the example of the United States where private transport is encouraged, Mr. Reddy said in the face of global challenges like increasing fuel rates and climate change, modes of transport like the metro should be encouraged.
A study by Toxics Link has revealed alarmingly high levels of lead in household dust in the Capital that may have serious consequences for the health and well-being of its residents. Since leaded petrol was banned in 2000, the findings of the study have indicated an alternative source of the dreaded element -- paints and toys. The study was conducted across 57 households in Delhi that were sampled for levels of lead in floor and windowsill dust.
Lieutenant-Governor praises initiative of two NGOs Staff Reporter Delhi's Lieutenant-Governor Tejendra Khanna launched a green shopper campaign here on Tuesday. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Khanna said it was a good initiative by two non-government organisations, "Green Forum" and "Chetanalaya", which would distribute jute and cotton shopping bags in Delhi and the National Capital Regions to counter the poly and plastic bag menace.
Delhi leiutenant governor Tejendra Khanna on Tuesday made a passionate appeal to the capital's residents to choose public transport as their mode of travel for bringing down the air pollution level in the city. Mr Khanna said that the government should develop the public transport system in the capital so that vehicle owners riders switch over to it. "This will help in bringing down the air pollution level which is creating problems for them,' he said, calling for larger public participation in protection of the environment.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is all set to unveil Ghazipur Meat Processing Plant with a trial run starting from Wednesday. Mr Vijender Gupta, chairman, standing committee, said that a team of eight experts from Germany was already providing training to the MCD staff as well as outside professionals. "Around 60 butchers are being trained in handling the new equipment. The trial run will be held as part of training,' he said.

Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has recently reaffirmed the authorised status of IGL to serve not only the city of Delhi but also its suburbs in NCR. The bus commuters plying between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh can now look forward to an easy journey. The Delhi and Uttar Pradesh Governments signed an agreement on Monday, which would facilitate free movement of vehicles in each other's territory. "Better connectivity between NCR in UP and Delhi and free movement of commercial vehicles of the NCR States like Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh will now be possible. This is a historic agreement signed after 23 years," said Delhi Transport Minister Haroon Yusuf.

The draft transport agreement between the UP and Delhi governments is a step ahead for the Environmental Pollution (Prevention and Control) Authority appointed by the Supreme Court to monitor government projects with the aim of preventing pollution by decongesting the city. Stating that for interstate public transport, nothing short of CNG would be allowed in the NCR, EPCA chairman Bhure Lal said the idea behind the agreement was not just to facilitate movement but also to get more people to use public transport.

This agreement expands the existing roadmap for movement of public transport, including buses, taxis and autorickshaws in both states and the National Capital Region.

The Rajasthan Cooperative Dairy Federation has started selling camel milk at its dairy milk parlour at Bikaner House in New Delhi. The new pasteurised milk packets have been priced at Rs.20 for half litre. Federation Chairman and Managing Director Madhukar Gupta said here on Monday that researchers had recently found camel milk good for the health of diabetes patients. The initial reports of the camel milk sale in Delhi were very encouraging, Mr. Gupta added.
