Milan Global food prices rose in March for a third month in a row driven by gains in vegetable oils and grain, adding to inflationary pressure, the United Nations’ FAO index showed on Thursday. New Delhi The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has hailed India’s efforts in achieving an all-time high grain production of 250.42 million tonne in the year through June, and pledged its support to root out hunger in the country. In a letter to agriculture minister Sharad Pawar, FAO director-general Jose Graziano da Silva has expressed the organisation’s willingness to work with the ministry to “strengthen field efficiency and secure sustainability of smallholder farmers’ benefits”.
Raising questions on funding for the National Food Security bill, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said monetary provision for state governments to fund it should be ensured, failing which it could not be implemented. "In the food security bill there is no monetary provision. We have to arrange the monetary provision, otherwise it cannot be implemented," she said during an interaction with a group of journalists.
