The world has been experiencing a dramatic surge in the price of many staple foods since 2005. The prices of cereals and oil have almost doubled in just one year. Soaring food prices and market instability have led to a threat to food security. This is particularly true for the population of the Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) region.
The 15th SAARC Summit has placed food security high on its agenda with the promise of more state intervention including a SAARC Food Bank to help any Member State in case of exigencies. Foreign Secretary Dr. Palitha Kohona addressing media at the conclusion of Standing Committee meetings said that all Member States had reached a consensus on the concept of a SAARC Food Bank. The leaders of the South Asian countries are set to issue a separate statement on food security, apart from the SAARC declaration, focussing on activating the regional food bank with an initial outlay of 2.5 lakh tonnes and enhancing cooperation in agriculture for boosting production.
Flooding and poor harvests have caused North Korea's worst food crisis since the late 1990s and have put millions at risk, the United Nations' food agency said Wednesday. The food shortage threatens widespread malnutrition, the World Food Program said. "Millions of vulnerable North Koreans are at risk of slipping toward precarious hunger levels," Jean-Pierre de Margerie, the WFP's country director for North Korea, told a news conference.
Ministers from about 35 countries have failed to make a breakthrough in the World Trade Organisation's (WTO) Doha round to open up global trade. Talkd to broker a new global trade pact have collapsed because key powers are unable to bridge their differences on food tariffs, the head of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) says. "There is no use beating around the bush, this meeting has collapsed, members have simply not been able to bridge their differences," WTO Director-General Pascal Lamy said.

At 1.7 million tonnes, the state accounts for 10 per cent of the country's total maize output. "The recent ban on export has led to depressed market conditions. The price of maize before the ban hovered around Rs 732 a quintal. Now, it has now crashed to Rs 500-600 a quintal. The procurement of maize by buyers has also come down drastically,' Kumar has stated in a letter to the PM.
