Cultivation of sweet potato in the coastal char lands could help ensure food security, said the experts at a seminar on Monday. They said char lands, which run risks of natural calamities like cyclone and tidal surge, are suitable and cost-effective for growing nutritious potato during the dry season. The international seminar was organised jointly by Brac and the Centre for International Potato (CIP) at Brac Centre Inn in the capital.
The South Asian nations are set to activate the SAARC food bank immediately after the summit meeting to help the member-countries tackle exigent situations after the foreign secretaries reached a consensus on the first day of their two-day meeting here on Tuesday. They agreed to help each other for increasing agricultural production by providing each other technological support as well as making the distribution mechanisms of food-grains more effective.
An agro food processing facility will be functional at the Multan Industrial Estate by the end of this year. Talking to this correspondent here on Tuesday, Pakistan Mango Growers Association President Zahid Hussain Gardezi said that machinery for the Rs213 million facility had been imported from Italy. He said Smeda provided Rs135 million for the machinery, which had arrived in Karachi, while the Punjab government provided funds for land procurement and construction of a building.

Instead, the EAC has said the ad hoc price of Rs 850 for paddy declared by the Union Cabinet last month should be the final MSP for the 2008-09 season, sources told Business Standard.

HYDERABAD: Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said the Centre would import one million tonne of edible oil every month for supply to various States for sale to below poverty line families (BPL) at a subsidised price. On this count, the Centre will bear a burden of Rs.1,500 crore, allowing a subsidy of Rs.15 a kg to the BPL households.

The food ministry's meeting with the representatives of the North Bengal Rice Mill Owners' Association was adjourned at the Bangladesh Secretariat on Sunday with the millers mounting pressure on the government to continue supply of rice at Tk 28 a kilogram from its stock. The mill owners also demanded incentives to offset the losses they were reportedly incurring from selling rice at the prices fixed by the government, said meeting sources.
