Trade body stages dharna against price hike
The Assam Chamber of Commerce (ACC) has asked the government not to hold the traders responsible for the price rise to save their own skin. The trade body observed a dharna at Jail Road in Fancy Bazar to protest against price rise and to oppose the entry of big corporate houses in the retail trade. The traders are going to submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi regarding their demands. A memorandum has already been submitted to the State Commerce Minister a few weeks back.

SDM orders inquiry into irregularities in mid-day meal scheme
Taking a serious note of irregularities in distribution of food to anganwari children, under the mid-day meal scheme in Barara sub-division, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate, Ashwini Mengi, has ordered an inquiry into the matter, which will be conducted by the Child Development Project Officer. Sources informed that the meals were being prepared for more heads than the original strength in the anganwadi. Mengi also said that those workers found guilty would not be spared and strict action would be taken against them.

Implementation of schemes: Don't deprive poor people
There is no proper implementation of schemes for people's welfare as announced by the government. As a result several problems are raising their head. This year there has been a record purchase of wheat at the mandis on support price. However, the farmers who could not sell their wheat in the mandis had to sell the same to the cooperative societies. But, they could not get payment as yet. Dozens of farmers of Charkheda, Timarni are experiencing trouble. These farmers had sold 2 thousand quintal wheat at support price to a registered cooperative firm.

Govt admits to mid-day meal anomalies in Meghalaya
The Meghalaya government today admitted a nexus between school managing committees and distributors of foodgrain which has badly affected implementation of the Mid-day Meal Scheme (MDM). The government made the admission after a review meeting of the scheme in north-eastern states with Central Government officials here. Parliamentary Secretary Mass and Elementary Education Ampareen Lyngdoh told the media that certain managing committees and distributors were in nexus that resulted in distribution of poor quality foodgrain in schools under the scheme.
