We thought wide-scale food shortages were behind us. Just a few years ago, most countries - with the exception of some in Africa - were looking as if they would be capable of adequately feeding their people, and the rich world was trying to figure out what to do with its food mountains. How things have changed. Droughts, high oil prices, changing diets, the rush to grow biofuels and other factors have caused shortages of most of the major food crops. So far, 22,37,892 metric tonnes of wheat has been procured on support price from farmers and Rs 1266.32 core has been paid to them. Farmers are being given Rs 100 bonus declared by the state government on the procurement of wheat at support price of Rs 1000 per quintal. Bulk of procurement is being made by state Civil Supplies Corporation. The quantity of procurement for this season is 47 fold more than the last year. During the entire Rabi season last year, only 47000 MT wheat was purchased.
Agriculture and food minister Sharad Pawar has said the restrictions imposed on export of major foodgrain are not permanent and the government could lift the ban once the supply situation improves. "I am confident that prices will go down and in such a situation we don't want to continue with these types of restrictions," Pawar said when asked about the demand being raised by world leaders on lifting export ban.

Pledges of almost three billion dollars of emergency aid were made at a food price crisis summit on Wednesday but UN chief Ban Ki-moon warned that up to 20 billion dollars a year would be needed to avoid disaster.
