US Senator Promotes Bill To Freeze Ethanol Mandate
US Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison on Monday proposed freezing the federal mandate for corn-based ethanol at this year's level, contending that using so much grain for fuel was pressuring the food supply. Hutchison introduced legislation that would freeze the federal mandate for corn-based ethanol at 9 billion gallons. The Texas Republican said this would allow for transition to a sustainable renewable fuel source that does not use food.

WFP starts food distribution in CHT
The United Nations World Food Programme has started distributing food assistance to meet the immediate food needs of over 1.2 lakh people affected by rodent attack in Rangamati and Bandarban. The WFP will continue to assist 25,680 households of the 31 most affected unions of the seven severely affected upazilas for a period of four months, from May to August 2008, said a press release.

Myanmar children could starve to death within weeks: Aid group
A leading aid group warned yesterday that thousands of young children in cyclone-ravaged Myanmar could starve to death within weeks unless emergency food supplies reach them soon. Save the Children said on its website that the youngsters could succumb to hunger "within two to three weeks". "We are extremely worried that many children in the affected areas are now suffering from severe acute malnourishment, the most serious level of hunger," said Jasmine Whitbread, chief executive of Save the Children UK.

US aid for Mizoram to tide over food crisis
The United States will provide an assistance of $50,000 to the Mizoram Government to tide over the food crisis caused due to large-scale crop destruction by an infestation of rats during cyclical flowering of a special species of bamboo every 48 years. Stating that over 30,000 families were facing a food crisis, including 10,000 most severely, a US Consulate release here said, the US government, following the American Embassy's declaration of disaster, would provide assistance of $50,000 for food crisis victims in affected areas of Mizoram.

About 3 billion people are food insecure: U.N. report
The total number of food insecure people was probably closer to about three billion, or about half the population of the world, according to the United Nations midyear update of the World Economic Situation and Prospects. In addition, approximately 18,000 children die daily as a direct or indirect consequence of inadequate nutrition, the UN report says.
