GUILHERME ALMEIDA If Curtorim villagers have sounded the bugle of agitation for the closure of the Sonsodo garbage dump, the authorities should blame themselves for the pathetic state of affairs there. Ask the member of the govt-appointed committee to oversee the situation, Microbiologist Dr Joe D'Souza. He says the situation is indeed "grim' at Sonsodo and want the civic body and all concerned to take the matter seriously before things go out of control.
PANJIM, July 4 - The recently released Olive Ridley turtle with a single flipper returned back to the state's coastline and was rescued at Miramar beach this afternoon. The matter was reported by locals to Panjim Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) who rushed to the site and thereafter handed over the turtle to the forest department. It is reported that the turtle appears unfit with its lone flipper also showing signs of deterioration. If one recalls, the injured olive ridley was retrieved earlier this month and released after brief treatment.

According to sources, better days are ahead for the residents from Agonda, Loliem-Polem, Gaondongrim and Poinguinim on garbage disposal front. Canacona BDO has taken up the lands earmarked by the local bodies under the Rural Garbage Disposal Scheme 2005 for acquisition process.
We all learn from experience
JULIAN D'COSTA The annual drives for greening of Goa could soon be in for a major roadblock, as shortage of land for plantations has already hit the state forest ministry. Data shows that the land area under such drives have already reduced by 40 per cent, and could drop further in the years to come.
The oil price hike burdens already strained State finances and threatens to jeopardise welfare programmes run by State governments. THE Union government's decision to raise the prices of petroleum products has placed State governments in a quandary. While taxes on petroleum products constitute a significant proportion of a State's revenue, a reduction of these taxes could undermine the State's fiscal balance.
If all the rain that fell in Goa during the year was trapped, the entire state would be flooded with water between seven and 10 feet deep, depending on whether it was a bad or good monsoon. That is the bounty nature has blessed this land with. Yet, today, we have a shortage of drinking water. Our cities get just a few hours of water supply a day, and many of our villages get water only once every alternate day, sometimes even less frequently during the summer. There could not be a contrast more stark.
