Forest fires are being controlled in Tamil Nadu with the help of satellite data, forest officials say. Thanks to the availability of data on forest fires, it can be downloaded and overlaid with the administrative map of the forests to point the exact location in which it occurs. Talking about the facility, a senior forest official said active fire spots were detected using Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectro-Radiometer Sensors (MODIS) and the data is available on a daily basis for the entire world on the ‘Fire Information for Resource Management Systems’ website.
Solar power plants, to be promoted under the Tamil Nadu Government’s policy on solar energy, may not face the problem of evacuation some windmills face. Solar power is more dispersed than wind power and the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) and Transmission Corporation (Transco) have about 1,350 substations across the State, say power managers.This assumes relevance as 1,500 megawatt (MW) of the targeted 3,000 MW for the next three years is to be generated through utility scale projects.

According to a release from Collector Darez Ahamed, the contribution of the village health nurses (VHNs) in health sector is indispensable. Apart from confirming pregnancy in women in their village, the VHNs render several services including registering patients’ names, providing various services before and after delivery, recording birth\death of children, providing treatment for minor diseases, vaccinating children and mothers, giving tablets for patients affected by tuberculosis, referring patients to primary health centres, recommending assistance to eligible pregnant women, and promoting institutional delivery.
The survey of adolescents in Chennai Schools has surprised both doctors at Madras Medical College (MMC) and Chennai Corporation officials. Findings revealed that almost 90 per cent of the students rarely ate fruit, and 50 per cent do not want to eat vegetables. In fact, during the survey the children were emphatic when they said they did not like vegetables, said Anand Moses, head of the college’s diabetology department, which conducted the survey.

The ‘Kidagamparambu model’ of waste management could be the answer to the growing garbage menace in the State. Over 100 biogas plants have been set up in Kidagamparambu ward comprising 850 houses. Nearly 300 houses are treating waste at the source, with each biogas plant capable of treating the waste generated in five houses. The plant produces biogas which can be used as fuel for cooking, saving plant owners the money spent on buying cooking gas. The initiative with the slogan, ‘Clean house, clean city’ was conceptualised by T.M. Thomas Isaac, MLA.
Will be valid for a period of five years The State Environment Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) has granted environment clearance for 11 more sand quarries in the Cauvery-Coleroon river basin. A few days ago, the SEIAA had granted clearance for 10 new sand quarries in Tiruchi, Karur, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur and Namakkal districts. In the second batch of clearance, 11 quarries have been approved, sources told The Hindu on Friday.
District Collector Rajendra Ratnoo has stated that the people should make it a point to celebrate Deepavali free from noise pollution. He has suggested that the money to be spent on firecrackers could be set aside for helping the poor students to buy books and clothes. In a statement issued here, the Collector has observed that the firecrackers would cause both noise and atmospheric pollution. Bursting of firecrackers would generate sulphur-dioxide, nitrogen-dioxide and harmful suspended particles.

The Centrally-sponsored ‘National Mission on Food Processing’ (NMFP) has been established jointly by the State government and Union Ministry of Food Processing Industries. The objective of the programme is decentralisation of implementation of schemes through participation by State governments. In a press release issued here on Wednesday, C.Manoharan, Collector, said the NMFP would focus on food processing for enhancing farm productivity and farmer’s revenue. The State government would be facilitated in addressing both institutional and infrastructural gaps along the value chains. An efficient supply chain for farm produce would be created. It would also promote initiatives for skill development, training and entrepreneurship in post-harvest management and food processing industry. The food processing industry would be assisted to meet the standards in terms of food safety laws and market demand – both domestic and international.
