The Chennai Corporation will strengthen the management of biomedical waste in the city shortly. At a meeting attended by representatives of the Corporation, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and the Department of Environment among others, the Corporation was asked to improve scientific disposal of biomedical waste. Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry has welcomed the new Solar Energy Policy 2012, which targets generation of 3,000 MW through solar power by 2017 by mandating large power consumers to buy 6 per cent of their power needs from solar energy producers. In a statement, chamber senior president S. Rethinavelu said that the policy would enable industries to reduce their dependence on State-supplied power and the generators which were fast becoming expensive after increase in the diesel tariff. The move to provide incentives to attract domestic and foreign investors in solar power plants would bring about a reduction in costs, which are now on the higher side and out of reach for most domestic consumers.
