PMK to stage demonstration on July 9 The Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) has urged the government to give up the move to acquire agricultural land for establishing an industrial cluster at Arakkonam. In a statement here on Sunday, the party founder, S. Ramadoss, pointed to the reports in circulation that the government was planning to acquire agricultural lands to establish SIPCOT (State Industries Promotion Corporation) in Arakkonam, Vellore district. The party would hold a demonstration on July 9 at Arakkonam against the move, he said.

The 136-year-old Red Hills reservoir, one of the city’s major primary drinking water sources, is set to be improved after several decades. The Water Resources Department (WRD) has not taken up any major project at the reservoir since 1994, except for maintenance work worth Rs.5 lakh every year. The WRD has now called for a tender for the project, worth Rs. 10.16 crore, to strengthen the reservoir. The water level in the reservoir now stands at 8.43 feet. The department has not stepped up the level for a few months now, in order to facilitate repair work.
National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) will be helping 365 small, marginal and large farmers in Dindigul district to implement drip irrigation. The farmers would be provided subsidy from 75 to 100 per cent of the project cost under the NABARD Watershed Programme. S. The Union government on Thursday furnished copies of agreements between India and the erstwhile USSR, and Russia, relating to the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP). On June 18, a Division Bench comprising Justices P.Jyothimani and M.Duraiswamy asked Additional Solicitor-General M.Ravindran to furnish copies of the agreements. The Bench was hearing a batch of writ petitions for and against the nuclear power plant.
