Westerly winds have started blowing in the district With the setting of the much awaited westerly winds, sweltering heat and power cuts have almost vanished to a great extent in Tirunelveli and the neighbouring Kanyakumari district. The giant metallic turbine blades of nearly 3,000 windmills of Muppandal have started rotating to generate clean and green energy to effectively bridge the gap between demand and supply.

A few textile processing and tannery units located in BP Agraharam and its nearby areas dumped huge amount of untreated, toxic effluents in a water carrying channel that flows into Cauvery River. The colour of the water turned black in the channel and the acidic smell emanated from the effluents.
The ongoing sapling-planting drive has received a fresh boost this World Environment Day, with 4,000 new saplings being planted around Tiruchi by the city corporation. Held as part of the celebrations organised by the Bishop Heber Higher Secondary School in Teppakulam, the day's drive was focussed on main roads and government office premises.

Ramanaa, Minister for Environment, said on Tuesday. Participating in the World Environment Day celebrations here, he said the National Environment Policy 2006 had laid out the vision for State-specific policies.
Water scarcity may be a thing of the past in nearly 20 villages around Nallatur in Tiruvallur district. As part of its efforts to recharge depleting groundwater resources, the Water Resources Department (WRD) has proposed to construct another check-dam in Nallatur across the Kosasthalaiyar River. The check-dam, which would store water that drains into the sea, would also help irrigation in the surrounding areas. The proposed facility would supply water to an additional 225 hectares of lands.

NPCIL to submit technical details to MoEF before starting work With the first two units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) coming close to the stage of commissioning, the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) has received the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) clearance for starting work on the next four units (KKNPP units 3-6). The NPCIL has to submit a schematic diagram of its outfall and technical details to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) before commencing the work.
Since May 25, windmills have contributed 31 to 34 per cent of the total power consumed in the State every day. Tamil Nadu has nearly 7,000 MW of installed wind energy capacity and peak generation from these windmills has remained above 3,200 MW for the last 12 days. According to data available on the website of the Tamil Nadu Transmission Corporation, on May 25, of the total 227.296 million units of energy consumed in the State, 75.002 million units were contributed by wind energy.
