Ministry told to commission study of all proposed thermal power plants along coast Suspending the environmental clearance (EC) given to the Chettinadu Power Corporation's 1200-MW power project in Tharangambadi taluk of Nagapattinam district, the National Green Tribunal has directed the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) to commission a Cumulative Impact Assessment study of all proposed thermal power plants along the district coastline here within one year.
In her speech at the Union Planning Commission in New Delhi, she said that her government had made enormous efforts to end the anti-nuclear plant agitation. Its efforts would benefit the Centre's long-term policy on nuclear energy. Of the total package, Rs.300 crore would be required for providing housing to 10,000 persons living around the KKNNP site. The remaining Rs.200 crore would be spent by KKNPP authorities under their Corporate Social Responsibility schemes for meeting other basic needs such as fish landing centre, cold storage facilities and motor boat repair workshop.

The drive was led by Salem Railway Divisional Superintendent K. Mohan and Assistant Health Officer A.K. Rajagopalan. The drive led by Station Master Chinnarasu and Commercial Inspector R.V. Ramnath and Divisional Railway Users Consultative Committee Member Jameel Ahmed was carried out by 20 conservancy workers, call taxi drivers, loading and unloading workers in the parcel section besides porters.
There is a pertinent need to protect the birds of the Nilgiris by installing nest boxes, feeding and providing them with water, said P.J. Vasanthan, Deputy Director of Medical Services of The Nilgiris. He was speaking on the subject ‘Birds of Nilgiris' at the Enviro Meet organised by Osai. Mr. Vasanthan said that the total species of the Nilgiris are 279 of 62 families. Of these 279 bird species, 52 are migrants, nine are local migrants, 18 are endemic to Western Ghats, eight are nearly threatened species, five are vulnerable species, three are endangered species and three critically endangered species.
Wildlife officials have submitted a proposal to the State Government to create a new tiger reserve in the existing Grizzled Giant Squirrel sanctuary in Srivilliputhur in Virudhunagar district. Shekhar Kumar Niraj, Conservator of Forests, Virudhunagar Circle, says that in the recent population monitoring exercises, tigers were sighted frequently in the sanctuary's middle and upper ridges. In the recently concluded census, participants sighted an adult tigress with two of her cubs in the foothills of Rajapalayam Range of the sanctuary.

Several thousand fishes died in a sprawling lake in Poosivakkam village near Wallajahbad in Kancheepuram district. While residents noticed a few dead fishes floating on the surface of the water earlier this week, many more were found along the banks since Thursday evening. According to sources in Wallajahbad Panchayat Union, the death was due to contamination of the lake by effluents from several dyeing units in villages around the lake.
